Exploring Music Video

Analysis of 4 music videos. I've chosen 4 different music video genres, Metal, Indie, Rap, Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP5PqJpk5lQ - Metal, SlipKnot, Dead Memories

This video is very interesting, to the naked eye it seems a man, going through all manors of rooms, but this is a visual image of what he is seeing into his mind. Slipknot also bring an element of fear and anger into there music, which is shown through there 'masks' that they wear, which de-individualises them, also they are satanic, and often say how they bring up hell in there music, which is used with the fire in the video. The craze and anger of the video really help reflect what they're about in their music. The Audience to this genre of music, can be people who have anger they want to release, but release it in the way of listening to this 'anger' music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdK3YGXwDOI - Indie, MGMT, Electric Feel

Indie music is quite upbeat, and lyrics are often very peculiar but have subliminal meanings behind them. Indie is an abbreviation of individual, they often wear/look different to most music videos, wearing different clothes or over the top make up. The 'electric feel' that they talk about in the song, is the feeling they get from the drug acid (Lysergic acid diethylamide) and the video is wandering round a forest, in this imaginary place which is what they feel whilst intoxicated on the drug. The audience to this genre, are people who like to be different, and not mainstream.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIQWRHJq_kE&feature=avmsc2 - Rap, Eminem, Just Don't Give A F***

Eminem also know as Marshall Mathers, is a very angry rapper, with a deep background of family problems, drug addiction and many more, he uses rap to release his emotions. This song sends a message of how he 'doesn't care' (Polite way of putting it) he often attracts a (Male) youth audience as his lyrics are sometimes misogynistic and makes many crude jokes about people, linked with clever rhyming. In this video it helps to show his drug addiction (alcohol and cocaine) also how he was beaten at a young age, he also is showing his dark past, which could be why the whole video is in grey. Rap lyrics are often angry, as with the Metal genre, as they're both good genres to allow to release emotions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Abk1jAONjw&feature=avmsc2 Lady Gaga, Just Dance, Pop

This video is very colourful, and joyful, it's set in a party situation where everyone is having fun, pop can attract any audience, but Lady Gaga is interesting as although her music is not Indie, her characteristics are very much so. For example, she wears the most outrageous outfits that no one else would dare to wear. The video was her debut video and helped boost her career, the lyrics are often very simple but effective.

Introduction

Within this coursework I will be working with my group to create a music video, this music video will have a music track (Of what our group desires) and we will create the video around the song, relating certain aspects of the video too the song, for example, if the song is a dark, or sad song, the video itself could be darker, helping reflect what the song is about.

The coursework will be a development of my media skills, and will also be a way to show a development of skills, from the previous coursework in the AS year - http://sdcmediaaskrisflynn-hutt.blogspot.com/
